ME111 Mathematics Education I

This course looks at content and methods for teaching mathematics in the primary school program focusing on problem solving, mathematical reasoning and communication in mathematics. Students will examine their own philosophy of Mathematics and discuss how it influences the teaching and learning of Mathematics. They will also examine and apply different teaching strategies and learning styles to develop mathematical concepts and processes through an investigative-based approach. There will be specific emphasis on how children acquire mathematical ideas and skills. Students will have the opportunity to prepare teaching and learning resources, and investigate and discuss the structure and content of the Primary Mathematics Curriculum. A special emphasis will be on the teaching and learning of mathematics at the middle primary level.
